“I would like to share what my experience has been with the Creating Space Yoga studio.

I have been a student of Yoga for 22-years. I took up Yoga as I had discovered that, for myself, Yoga is an effective alternative form of mental and physical therapy for someone with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

I have attended a number of Yoga studios through the years I’ve been a student, initially searching to obtain a better understanding of Yoga and how it could help my body and then seeking to find a studio that more suited my ideology and provided the classes that complimented me.

So, when I recently moved to Oakville a couple of years ago, I was dreading having to resume my search once again for a Yoga studio that met my expectations. At the time, not knowing anyone from the community in which I could “ask around”, I simply relied on my own intuition as to where I should begin my search. The first studio that really grabbed my attention was Creating Space Yoga.

I remember the first time I entered Creating Space Yoga. A woman named Robyn, greeted and welcomed me to the studio. From the first class on, I was impressed with her passion for Yoga and felt very at ease within the environment in which the studio was presented; from the peaceful setting and the wonderfully sunlit studio, right down to the beautiful original artwork that decorated the entrance hallway. I quickly realized that Robyn was not only an instructor, but that Creating Space Yoga was her studio.

However, experience has taught me that one individual does not make a great studio. I soon though had opportunity to attend classes taught by other Creating Space Yoga instructors. It was then that I knew I had found where I needed to be. I am now a regular attendee to multiple sessions a week.

Since first attending classes at Creating Space Yoga, I have studied with Cheryl, Helen, Natalie, Nicole and Robyn. Each instructor brings a level of passion and understanding of Yoga that I truly find amazing. As an individual that lives with MS, even though I have been a student of Yoga for many years, there are some limitations that I have to deal with. I am continually impressed with the manner in which each instructor is able to modify the lessons to allow for me to fully participate.

Another element of Creating Space Yoga that I thoroughly enjoy is the opportunity to attend the specialized workshops that are presented throughout the year. These specific workshops provide an opportunity to experience and further my study of Yoga. The diversity of the workshops offered represents to me the awareness, the understanding and certainly the passion that the Creating Space Yoga instructors bring to the studio and share with everyone.

I am so very grateful that Creating space Yoga was “born”. Like us all,it continues to grow and develop with the needs of its clients, and the Creating Space Yoga community. I look forward to having Creating Space Yoga be an integral part of my own journey.”

“After having explored several other approaches to the body, discovering Helen Duquette and her approach to Yoga was for me a revelation. Rather than focusing on the ideal posture and on achieving, I learned two fundamental principles: Be exactly where you are and undo years of bad habits. Helen is exquisitely intuitive. She is always exactly there where the student is, not caught up in some preconceived ideas of her own.

Continuing Vanda Scaravelli’s tradition, she works with gravity, space and breath. She teaches how to surrender to gravity and use it to one’s advantage, opening the spine and the whole body into the new spaces that this letting go creates. Her instructions are precise, yet never just focused on the body, but including the mind as well. Sometimes, her instructions seem maddeningly paradoxical, until suddenly the light comes on and a whole subtle world emerges that was hidden from view. Helen is provocative, an original in the best sense of the term, and even though her approach may not be for everybody, in working with her you cannot avoid being deeply transformed.”

“I have practiced Yoga since I was eight years old (my Mom was a Hatha Yoga teacher) so I feel I can comment from a well-informed perspective.

As an adult I have continued my practice to maintain flexibility, compliment my running and for peace of mind.  I have found all these at Creating Space.

The studio itself is welcoming and serene.  The large windows that let in natural light, the light coloured bamboo floors, soft blue blankets and soothing music as you enter all set the stage for a fulfilling practice.

I have regularly attended Cheryl Smith’s Saturday morning class and there is no better way to begin the weekend.  The class follows a pattern but is never the same.  Each week presents a different part of the body for focus and attention.  Each student is given individual attention and care so that the practice is safe and challenging for that individual.  I always leave the class feeling energized and calm; ready to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

I have also attended Robyn Bowman’s classes.  Her approach is athletic and challenges me to try new poses in a safe and supported setting.  Robyn’s restorative Yoga classes are the answer to a stressful week at work.  Leaving these classes you feel centered and relaxed.  You have taken the time for yourself and are rewarded with positive energy.

My husband has also attended the Yoga for Men as well as the lecture series offered and has thoroughly enjoyed both experiences.”

“The moment I step into the studio and unroll my mat a peaceful, yet anticipatory calm spreads through me.  I love the physical side of the studio.  It emanates strength, a solid foundation and too, a calmness, that radiates through the beautiful, giving, cork flooring.  My personal favourite are the flow classes.  This small Wednesday evening group of yoga loving students is willingly led through a wide variety of yoga moves.  Nicole instructs and guides us in a way that unfolds our bodies to new heights. Her sense of humour and gentle nudges works magic.  By the time I roll up my mat again I am rejuvenated and thankful.  Thankful that this studio, the instructors and students, are close by and part of my busy life. “

“Just before class, I was on the verge of yet another migraine. However, the anticipation of doing the Restorative Yoga got me to the studio. The practice got me through and past the migraine. This morning, migraine free and re-energized! Thank you!!!

“I wanted to give you some feed back about the Friday Restorative Yoga class from last week.  It was certainly very relaxing and what a wonderful way to end the week.  Nicole was great – she definitely gave a great sense of support & nurturing and it was such a treat to have a blanket wrapped around you for warmth & comfort.  A few of us were laughing as we arrived with our mats and our blankets (we felt like we were coming to a PJ party) – so there was a sense of fun too.

Initially I wasn’t sure what to expect so thought I’ll just be open to the experience.  I found the concentration of staying in a pose for a longer period of time to be quite beneficial, as it helped to appreciate the value of that particular pose (for instance, I’m thinking of child’s pose) and how it stretches out your lower back and elongates the spine. Even though we do this pose quite regularly in a normal class it’s not for as long a period of time – with the restorative you had the time to really experience the value at a deeper level.  Also, I found staying in the postures gave a more heightened sense of personal body awareness.  I was more aware of where I was holding tension and how to let it go.  And, I found my breathing really slowed down and went much deeper into my body.  No wonder I felt so relaxed and I noticed I still felt relaxed when I came to class the next morning .  Overall it is amazing what we do to our bodies with all our reactions and emotions and it is even more amazing how yoga can un-do all of that and “restore” us back to our more natural state.

So – thank you for having this as part of your offering at the Studio – it is wonderful and I’m so very glad the universe guided me to Creating Space.”

“I am going to try to articulate my thoughts about the wonderful experience of attending this series of lectures. First off, I am eager for more.

I went, not really knowing what to expect, and searching for a group to meditate with, I went with an open mind and kind of excited to see what I might learn.

Well it did not take long to think to myself that this was beyond my understanding. So I just listened. No notes. Then when question time came I was even more perplexed. Not only was I unsure about having grasped the gist of the lecture the questions were just as challenging. Then when Dr. Trayvaud began to answer the questions the lights came on.
