Listening To The Whispers

Robyn Bowman practiced yoga long before it became trendy. Twenty three years ago yoga was not a noun and it did not have stores full of dedicated clothing, mats and props. There were no hot yoga studios or variations designed to keep the workout crowd happy. Back then, people did not wear yoga pants to the grocery store either and now you can buy them there! At first glance it would seem that Creating Space Yoga Studio in Southeast Oakville is another yoga studio in a crowded market. The deeper...

And then there was music…

Almost 10 years ago, I had a vision of a studio space that created opportunities for people to feel safe and supported as they looked inside and discovered different parts of themselves. Yoga was one doorway into the self that I knew well.  It made sense to begin there.  I am so proud of the yoga and the depth of practices that have been shaped and have evolved at Creating Space Yoga Studio. Mindfulness was another tool that was so important to bring to our community.  It is essential part of a...

Gratitude.

Why wait for this weekend to voice your gratitude?  Why not celebrate a Thanksgiving each day as you take your first sip of coffee/tea, kiss your loved ones a good day, arrive safely to school or work and before you enjoy your evening meal. Most of us understand that we have so much to be thankful for…but how often do we speak it?  How would it feel if we were to say thank you everyday to our spouse, children, colleagues, local farmers or neighbourhood baristas?  How could it change a life...

Summer’s End

The summer’s end creates space for the freshness of fall. I usually I have a hard time saying goodbye to the summer season.  Summer is the season where I have more time for adventure and ease. As many of you know, I had an incredible adventure this summer hiking through the Sierra Nevada mountains and then my adventure took a spontaneous turn and we finished our adventure in the desert! I have so much to share and I will find some time over the next few weeks to write about my experience....

“The Mountains are calling and I must go.”

“The Mountains are calling and I must go.”  ~ John Muir Adventures usually start with an idea that either grows or dies.  This time my crazy idea of thru-hiking the John Muir Trail (JMT), in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains has evolved and brought me to this exact moment.  The week has finally arrived and my adventure is just ahead. For many, many months, I have been dreaming, planning, organizing and training for an adventure of a lifetime.  With the months of research behind...

With A Beginner’s Mind, Each Moment, Each Breath, Each Pose Is Unique

Through our whole life we learn, we accomplish, we fail and we grow.  We hope to one day have “figured it all out” or to have at least answered the questions that plague us the most.  It would be nice to feel that we have “mastered” or become an “expert” in many different areas of our own life.  So why do we hear about the value of a “beginner’s mind” come up time and time again?  Why on earth would we want to stay a beginner?  Isn’t the point of being here to learn, evolve and master?  Don’t we...

Make The Ordinary Come Alive

Do not ask your children to strive for extraordinary lives. Such striving may seem admirable, but it is a way of foolishness. Help them instead to find the wonder and the marvel of an ordinary life. Show them the joy of tasting tomatoes, apples, and pears. Show them how to cry when pets and people die. Show them the infinite pleasure in the touch of a hand. And make the ordinary come alive for them. The extraordinary will take care of itself.     By William Martin, The Parent’s Tao Te...

Bound By Certainty

I remember moving away from home at the age of 18 feeling confident that I was already worldly, independent and smart. I was full of hope and in my opinion, already had an incredible sense of knowing. It amazes me when I look back and marvel at my young confidence. A fortunate epiphany and my greatest learning that first year away from home and attending university was the realization that what I thought I knew was so small compared to what I still had to learn! It was a humbling acknowledgement...

Create Mindful Moments

Many people think that meditation is difficult. They can’t even fathom sitting still for a few minutes let alone 45 minutes. Who has time for that??? I know that a formal sitting meditation is difficult. We are busy. We have lots to do. But consider approaching a meditation practice as not something that we have to “do”. How about approaching meditation as connecting to your moment as it is right now? That’s it. Take the pressure off and redefine what meditation can mean for you. While we...

Why Would Anybody Want To Learn About The MPC?

I remember teasing Dr. T. several weeks ago. I poked at him, “Why would anybody want to learn about the MPC?” He rolled his eyes, laughed at me (as he usually does) and then sighed and spoke. He said with a coy smile on his face, “Robyn, this lecture will change your life! It will allow you to understand what you teach more fully. Robyn, you will come to love the MPC!” So here I am a few days after his lecture, “The Amazing MPC” and I must admit … he was right. The MPC is amazing. More amazing t...
