Duo Calixa – Bio

The Canadian flute and guitar ensemble Duo Calixa, featuring Kelly Williamson and Mariette Stephenson, was formed in 2012. Flutist Kelly Williamson is a graduate of McGill University and the University of Montreal. A specialist in flute pedagogy, she has been invited to teach at workshops all over the world, most recently in Peru, Mexico, the US, Tanzania and Japan. Kelly has also adjudicated for music festivals including the Kiwanis festival, and been a frequent clinician in public and private schools. A Teacher Trainer with the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA), she serves on several committees for the SAA as well as being the flute columnist of the American Suzuki Journal.

Guitarist Mariette Stephenson holds degrees from the University of Toronto, Royal Conservatory of Music and McMaster University. She has given recitals in throughout Canada, and is also an active and dedicated teacher. She is the recipient of the Eli Kassner Guitar Scholarship, a University of Toronto Fellowship, and the Bernice Adams Bursary. She also received an Arts Award from the City of Cambridge in 2006. Mariette has premiered new works by Canadian composers William Beauvais, Patrick Power and the Brazilian composer Jonatas Batista-Neto.

Both musicians have appeared with other ensembles, including solo performances with orchestra and various chamber formations; Kelly has made several appearances as soloist with orchestra, done orchestral work for various theatre productions, and participated on CDs for Chroma Musika and the Montreal West Operatic Society. She was a regular member of Trio Ambiance in Montreal and played several seasons with L’Ensemble Sinfonia and l’Orchestre Symphonique de l’Ile. She recently participated in the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra’s chamber music series and played several concerts with Symphony on the Bay, including principal flute for “The Virtuoso Clarinet” and “Schumann and the Young Musicians.

Mariette has performed in many chamber music concerts, including recitals with soprano Brooke Dufton, Bonchiku Hoshi (shakuhachi), Tom Fitches (organ) and a performance under the baton of Gordon Mansell in ‘The Prayer Cycle’ (a work for guitar, choir and orchestra). Mariette has also performed for the Brantford Guitar Society, Toronto Guitar Society and Organix Festival.

As a duo, they share an enthusiasm for the music of Latin America and are starting their partnership by celebrating that repertoire on their first recording, to be released in 2014.
