Props For Your Home Practice

  • While props aren’t necessary for a yoga practice, they do come in handy and can be modified. Props can be used for additional support, steadier balance and even a deeper stretch when settling into yoga poses. The type of props you will need also varies depending on the type of yoga class it is. The props listed below are suggestions and you can build your prop library over time. Many household items can be substituted. Just ask your teacher and get creative!

  • Yoga Mat

    One of the primary functions of a yoga mat is to provide stability and grip. The surface of a yoga mat is designed to prevent slipping, allowing practitioners to maintain balance and stability during various poses.

  • Bolsters

    Bolsters are a great way to find comfort when you need a soft, cushiony space for yourself in a pose. Bolsters are ideal for restorative and yin poses, as they add the extra support often needed in deep, restful poses. A practice at home usually finds other items to fill in. Try a dense pillow or cushion or a folded towel.

  • Meditation Cushion

    It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

  • Yoga Blocks

    B.K.S. Iyengar first introduced yoga blocks into his practice to better assist himself and his students’ alignment in the asanas. A block can help support you in many poses or movements. It is also helpful to bring the ground closer to you.

  • Yoga Strap

    Straps come in a wide variety of lengths and styles. Straps will help you deepen stretches without compromising the position of your back and can be used in many poses. At home, you could modify it by using a robe belt, tie or a long flexible belt.

  • Therapy Balls

    Therapy balls are a popular and effective tool that can be used to increase muscle mobility. Roll slowly over troublesome areas for relief of muscle and fascia tension. We use the full set in our popular Therapy Ball class. Some other balls could be used as a substitute, however the yoga tune-up balls listed below seem to be the most effective.

  • Blankets

    Folded blankets are easy yoga props to have on hand and can be used in more ways than you might think. They are the perfect addition to savasana for added comfort and warmth.

  • Eye Pillow

    When we think of Yoga equipment for home practice we need to think of props that deepen our practice. An eye pillow that is slightly weighted is a great prop to deepen restorative yoga or savasana.

  • Sandbags

    A sandbag is a great way to ground and bring yourself present into your practice. These are great for restorative yoga, and savasana and on those days when your body may feel busy or agitated. A heavy book, dense pillow or a heavier cork block can sometimes be substituted.

  • Light/Medium Weights

    Adding weights to a home practice will fill in some of those gaps that sometimes arise when our practice is only focused on relaxation. Start with a lightweight and then gradually build your strength and capacity for heavier loads.

  • Resitance Bands

    A chair and a sturdy wall are overlooked props that are helpful in many ways. We use both in all of our classes.
