Okay, I am letting the "cat out of the bag" (is that the saying?), Karin-Lynn Cumming is my Mom and she is also one of the CSY Walking Group coaches. This is important because I am proud of her. Her story from "couch potato" to "personal trainer" is inspiring and at one time completely out of character and unexpected. (I will include her story on this blog shortly).
While working with yoga educator/author Leslie Kaminoff many things rang true, but none so much as the above quote that he picked up from his teacher T.K.V. Desikachar. This has transformed my yoga practice.
Just the idea of a road trip often stirs up feelings of nostalgia, frustration, dread, excitement, humour and adventure. The descriptions of your memories seem to change to match the era in which you grew up.
Lately, I have been working with a lot of beginning students who are completely fresh to the yoga floor. So fresh that it has been intimidating for them to start, not knowing what to do from the moment when they first walk into the yoga studio.
I feel like summer is just about to start. I have to shake my head when I look at the calendar and see that we are half way through August and the "Back To School" commercials have hit the media. But I am happy to have a lighter step and to feel that some weight has been lifted off of my hard shoulders. Our website is almost complete and I am ready to share it with you!
Restorative yoga has been an important addition to our studio's offerings this past year. After training with highly esteemed yoga teacher and author of Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga For Stressful Times, Judith Lasater; Robyn Bowman, Nicole Patton and Natalie Suhanic have brought the work of restorative yoga into Creating Space Yoga Studio.
Cheryl Smith: Do you find that people are increasingly interested in Mindfulness Meditation? It seems to come up all the time in news articles, etc. these days.
We have been very fortunate to have Dr. Stéphane Treyvaud join us for the Mindfulness Lectures Series. The feedback has been incredible!
Take a look...
It's that time of year again when we hunt for cozy pyjamas to give to the children in the care of the Children's Aid Foundation of Halton. This will be our third year of organizing and developing our Holiday Pajama Drive.
On a recent sunny Saturday afternoon, I had the pleasure of sitting down for a chat with Dr. Stéphane Treyvaud about his upcoming lecture series at Creating Space Yoga. Dr. Treyvaud is an Oakville-based psychiatrist who treats adults in private practice but also runs a Stress Reduction Clinic that teaches Mindfulness Meditation to reduce stress, manage chronic pain, and help prevent disease. He gave a series of well-attended lectures last year at CSY and has returned to do another four lectures this term on other aspects of the practice of meditation.
Today was grey. It was cool but humid.
The kind of day where you decide not to bring an umbrella and it decides to pour on you, or you bring your umbrella and the rain never seems to arrive.
The summer has arrived! Probably the most anticipated and eagerly awaited season, the summer is a time to recharge the internal batteries. My yoga practice usually deepens during the summer months, unlike any other time of the year. My senses are more alert and I seem to take more time. It blossoms differently in ways that always surprise me. This is the way I approach my summer yoga practice. Perhaps it speaks to you?
As a way to continue this discovery of mindfulness, take a look at these reading suggestions. If you missed the first lecture series, don't worry...we look forward to offering a continuation and extension of these thought provoking lectures this fall and into the winter.
Our studio is making headlines in the local Oakville Beaver Newspaper. Word is spreading about how the Creating Space Yoga Community cares!
